Sun King, a trailblazer in affordable solar technology since 2007, has long empowered millions in Africa and Asia with essential appliances like lights, fans, and TV sets. Today, the firm reaches one in five Kenyan homes and pumps out over 330,000 solar kits each month continent-wide, a staggering leap from just 10,000 back in 2017. This new plant, capable of churning out up to 700,000 units a year with room to grow, promises to slash shipping costs, cut delivery times, and tap into Africa's vibrant workforce.

The move underscores a smarter approach to business in the region. By building closer to its core markets, Sun King aims to lower prices for customers, boost local economies, and shrink its carbon footprint through shorter supply lines. It's all about turning the tide on energy poverty while fostering jobs and skills that stick around for the long haul.

T. Patrick Walsh, Sun King's co-founder and CEO, couldn't hide his enthusiasm. "This facility lets us channel Africa's incredible talent and creativity straight into crafting reliable, budget-friendly products that change lives," he said. Echoing that sentiment, Wale Aboyade, senior vice president for public policy and government relations, added, "Our Kenyan outpost is a testament to our deep-rooted collaborations with local leaders and communities, pushing forward Africa's manufacturing prowess for years to come."

The timing feels spot-on. Just months ago, Sun King locked in a hefty KES 20 billion loan from major banks and global finance partners to supercharge its Kenyan footprint, eyeing 1.4 million underserved households and small enterprises with flexible pay-as-you-go solar gear. This aligns neatly with surging investor buzz around clean tech and climate innovations across the continent.

Looking ahead, Sun King isn't stopping at one site. Plans are underway for a second factory in Nigeria, setting the stage for a robust network that could redefine how solar power scales in West Africa.
