Poultry Powerhouse: Industry Fuels 25 Percent of Nigeria’s Agricultural Wealth

Poultry Powerhouse: Industry Fuels 25 Percent of Nigeria’s Agricultural Wealth

Written By: Flipbz.org

Nigeria’s poultry sector is clucking its way to economic prominence, contributing a hefty 25 percent to the nation’s agricultural GDP, according to the Poultry Association of Nigeria. At a recent industry briefing, association leaders spotlighted the sector’s vital role in driving food security, job creation, and economic growth, while calling for stronger government support to keep the momentum soaring.

The association’s president, Sunday Ezeobiora, painted a vibrant picture of an industry that’s more than just eggs and chicken. With millions of Nigerians relying on poultry for their daily protein, the sector has become a cornerstone of the agricultural landscape, generating billions in revenue and supporting countless livelihoods. From small backyard farms to sprawling commercial operations, poultry businesses are hatching opportunities across the country.

Ezeobiora highlighted the industry’s ripple effect, noting its ability to create jobs not just for farmers but also for feed producers, transporters, and marketers. “Every chicken raised lifts families and communities,” he said, underscoring the sector’s role in reducing unemployment and boosting rural economies. The association estimates that poultry farming directly and indirectly employs millions, making it a critical engine for grassroots development.

Despite its success, challenges loom large. Rising costs of feed, limited access to modern equipment, and disease outbreaks threaten to clip the industry’s wings. Ezeobiora urged policymakers to step in with targeted subsidies, improved access to credit, and investments in veterinary services to safeguard the sector’s growth. He also called for better infrastructure to streamline distribution, ensuring fresh products reach markets efficiently.

Industry experts echoed the call for support, pointing to the sector’s untapped potential. With Nigeria’s population growing rapidly, demand for affordable protein is skyrocketing, presenting a golden opportunity for expansion. Analysts suggest that strategic investments could position the country as a poultry powerhouse in Africa, potentially cutting reliance on costly imports.

The association also emphasized its commitment to sustainability, with plans to adopt eco-friendly practices and leverage technology to boost productivity. From solar-powered farms to advanced biosecurity measures, the industry is gearing up to meet modern challenges while keeping costs manageable for consumers.

As Nigeria’s poultry sector continues to thrive, it’s clear that this feathered force is more than just a farmyard staple—it’s a vital ingredient in the nation’s economic recipe. With the right support, industry leaders believe the sky’s the limit for poultry’s role in shaping a prosperous future.
