In a compelling pitch at a side event during the United Nations General Assembly, the Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA) extended a warm invitation to American investors, urging them to tap into the vast potential of Nigeria’s Special Economic Zones (SEZs). Dr. Olufemi Ogunyemi, NEPZA’s Managing Director, delivered a dynamic lecture titled “Free Zones and Industrial Competitiveness: Catalyzing Investment Through Regulatory Innovation,” highlighting the transformative prospects of these zones.
The event, themed “Ease of Doing Business in Nigeria: A New Era of Economic Opportunities,” served as a platform to align policy initiatives with private capital. Ogunyemi emphasized that Nigeria’s Free Trade Zones are more than just designated areas—they are vibrant business hubs designed to drive industrial growth and foster scalable investments across the region. He spotlighted zones like Lagos Free Zone, Lekki Free Zone, and Abuja Industrial Park Free Zone (AIPFZ), encouraging U.S. investors to visit and witness their cutting-edge infrastructure and active anchor tenants firsthand.
Ogunyemi underscored Nigeria’s massive market potential, noting its position as a gateway for regional expansion and international exports. He called for partnerships to develop anchor projects that could evolve into factory shells for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), generating jobs and boosting local procurement. Additionally, he invited investors to co-finance shared infrastructure to support hundreds of tenant businesses and scale up export production.
NEPZA’s commitment to investor success was a key focus, with Ogunyemi assuring robust support for due diligence, clear regulatory frameworks, and structured pathways to turn discussions into firm commitments. He highlighted NEPZA’s adoption of global best practices to enhance the zones’ industrial competitiveness, positioning them as prime destinations for foreign direct investment.
Expressing gratitude to the Nigerian Presidency and the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC), Ogunyemi praised their support in showcasing Nigeria’s SEZs to American stakeholders. He extended an open invitation to U.S. business councils, including the American Business Council, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and the Africa-U.S. Chamber of Commerce, to explore these opportunities and forge partnerships that could reshape Nigeria’s economic landscape.
With a clear vision and investor-friendly policies, Nigeria’s Free Trade Zones stand poised to become engines of growth, offering U.S. investors a strategic foothold in one of Africa’s most dynamic markets.
