Seven South African Startups Join Grindstone E Squared to Fast-Track Growth

Written By: Flipbz.org

Seven promising South African startups have earned a coveted spot in the Grindstone | E Squared Programme, a high-octane, founder-focused accelerator designed to propel high-potential ventures backed by Allan Gray Fellows and Pathways Investees into new heights of success.

Kicking off in July with a lively networking event in Johannesburg, the six-month initiative—run by Grindstone, a venture accelerator co-owned by Knife Capital and Thinkroom Limited, in partnership with E Squared Investments—targets innovation-driven businesses across diverse sectors like software, ed-tech, e-health, logistics, and food distribution. The selected startups are African Saga, spinning African comic and anime tales on Webtoon; Muna Studios, championing zero-waste shopping; Glo’s Cookies, crafting premium artisanal treats rooted in South African heritage; Genius UP, an ed-tech platform boosting exam prep with live coaching; Docotela Health, delivering affordable telehealth; SUTA National Logistics, streamlining delivery with tech; and Fleetfund, scaling logistics through innovative fleet-financing.

Participants dive into the Grindstone Academy, a digital hub packed with high-impact learning, including baseline assessments to pinpoint growth gaps. The program offers tailored workshops, one-on-one coaching, and investor-readiness support to sharpen market access and unlock funding opportunities. With South Africa pulling in $440 million in venture capital in 2024 but early-stage firms struggling to scale, Grindstone’s track record—boasting a 52% revenue boost and 30% efficiency gains for past cohorts—makes it a linchpin for turning small ventures into regional heavyweights.

“This program is a catalyst for measurable growth,” said a Grindstone spokesperson. “By equipping founders with tools, networks, and strategic insights, we’re helping them compete not just locally but across Africa’s innovation hubs.” As these startups harness the program’s resources, they’re poised to drive jobs, innovation, and impact, cementing South Africa’s role as a springboard for the continent’s entrepreneurial surge.
