Nigeria’s textile & fashion manufacturing sector has historically been one of its large employers and cultural cores. It includes the cultivation and processing of cotton, spinning, weaving, dyeing & printing, fabric finishing, and garment making. In recent decades, textile mills have suffered due to competition from imported fabrics, high cost of production (especially energy, foreign exchange, equipment maintenance), and inconsistent government policy. However, there’s renewed interest with policy interventions (e.g. import restrictions, textile subsidy/facility support), resurgence in local print fabrics (Ankara, Wax prints), and rising consumer demand for locally made fashion. Key success factors are vertical integration (cotton sourcing, spinning, dyeing, printing in-house), modern machinery, supply capacity, quality control (certifications, consistency in print/fabric), proximity to markets, and brand identity. Also, export potential (to other African countries, diaspora customers) is increasingly important. Fabric manufacturers that also supply fashion brands (local and international) tend to be more resilient. Innovations with sustainable fabrics, localized designs, digital printing, and faster turn-arounds are emerging as competitive advantages.
