Africa’s Ports Thrive When Nations Pull Together, Says Dantsoho

Africa’s Ports Thrive When Nations Pull Together, Says Dantsoho

Written By: Flipbz.org

Abubakar Dantsoho, managing director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, believes the continent’s maritime future hinges on one simple idea: neighbors helping neighbors.

Speaking at a high-level industry gathering, Dantsoho painted a picture of an Africa where cargo ships glide smoothly between ports, trade barriers crumble, and every coastal nation shares in the prosperity. “An interconnected Africa is not a dream,” he told the audience. “It is the only practical path to growth.”

He pointed to everyday bottlenecks that cost billions: congested terminals, mismatched regulations, and infrastructure that stops at national borders. Fix those, he argued, and the rewards multiply for everyone. Faster clearance times mean lower prices for consumers. Modernized facilities attract bigger vessels and global investors. Shared data networks cut paperwork and fraud.

Dantsoho highlighted success stories already in motion. Joint dredging projects have deepened channels used by multiple countries. Harmonized customs platforms now process shipments in hours instead of days. Training exchanges between port operators are building a new generation of skilled workers who speak the same technical language.

The managing director issued a direct challenge to policymakers and private operators alike. Invest in cross-border rail and road links. Adopt common safety standards. Pool resources for mega-terminals that no single nation could finance alone. “Every port that rises lifts the entire region,” he said.

Industry leaders in the room nodded in agreement. Shippers complained less about delays and more about how to scale up. Bankers talked financing packages for shared infrastructure. Environmental advocates praised plans for greener, coordinated port operations.

Dantsoho closed with a line that stuck with the crowd: “Africa’s coastline is long enough for all of us to win, but only if we row in the same direction.”
